The weather in Tenerife is usually very steady with all year round sunshine. There are, of course, slight variations in the weather from month to month and so, knowing the Tenerife weather forecast for your holiday will make sure you pick the best months to head off. You can check the local weather forecast if you are soon to be traveling to the island.
January
There is not a lot of rain during this month. It is a sunny month in both the north and south of the island with daytime shade temperatures in the south falling between 21-23C. In the north 18-22c. Out of the sun, it can feel more cooling, especially in areas that are more affected by the breeze – the south and southeast. There will be cloudy spells and snow has been known to fall at times in some areas.
February
An unpredictable month. The default setting is sun but it is one of the cloudiest months, and there are often weather alerts for high winds, rainfall, and wild seas at some point, usually from the middle of the month onwards. Heavy rain mostly affects the north but both the north and the south experience inclement weather in February. Another common aspect of February weather is heavy snow on Mount Teide; it’s not unusual for roads into Teide National Park to be closed at some point. Weather alerts do not last for long, only for a few days at most.
Daytime shade temperatures in the south are between 20-24C and 18-22C in the north.
March
March can mirror the end of February on the island. Short spells of wild weather are common, as winter gives way to spring. The beginning of March can see the heaviest snows on Teide and hot, sand-laden winds from North Africa, dust storms (calima) can often join the cast of weather conditions. Again, these tend to last for short spells. As the month progresses, spring makes its presence felt more and more. The mercury rises with daytime shade temperatures in the south ranging from 21-24C and in the north 18-23C.
April
Spring brings warmer temperatures, not that they ever get too cold, and the number of weather alerts reduces drastically. There can be some cloudy spells and rain showers, especially in northern parts whereas southern areas will be sunnier but breezier. Daytime shade temperatures range from 22-25C in the south and 19-25C in the north.
May
Once May arrives, the weather on Tenerife becomes a little more predictable with the south of the island having hot and sunny weather and the north also being warm and sunny but with more cloudy spells. There is still a possibility of rain during the month although the difference in temperatures isn’t significant. Daytime shade temperatures range from 24-26C in the south and 23-25C in the north.
June
Once June arrives, there is very little rainfall on the coastline as summer conditions creep in and take hold. In June, it is warm and sunny across the island, but it has been known for the Panza Del Burro (the belly of the donkey) to bring a sea of cloud across the Orotava Valley which, can hang around until mid-August. What many people fail to realize is that it does not affect all of the north only a small area of it. An example of this is Santa Cruz in the north of Tenerife, which in reality enjoys as much of, if not more sunshine hours than the south of the island. Daytime shade temperatures range from 24-28C in the south and 22-26C in the north.
July
Summer has arrived on Tenerife and temperatures soar, but not as much as mainland Spain with Puerto de la Cruz became one of the top summer destinations. This is a hot and sunny month, and there are regular heat waves during July when shade temperatures reach the mid-30s, mainly in southern parts with dust storms becoming a regular visitor in southerly and eastern areas.
Daytime shade temperatures to range from 28-30C in the south and 25-28C in the north is the usual pattern.
August
August is a mirror image of July apart from the difference in heat. If there has been the belly of the donkey weather in the Orotava Valley in the north, it usually disappears around the middle of the month. This is the month that the risk of forest fire is at its highest as the island, not having seen much rain for nearly three months, is tinderbox dry. It is another month when dust storms and heat waves, principally affecting southern and eastern parts, are common. Daytime shade temperatures range from 28-34C in the south and 26-31C in the north.
September
It is still very much summer on Tenerife. September is known in some quarters as the best month to a holiday, as it is hot, but not too hot with clear views. There can be some rain, especially towards the end of the month, but overall it is a perfect month weather wise. It is also a month where the north regularly enjoys better weather than the south. Daytime shade temperatures range from 28-30C in the south and 25-27C in the north.
October
Weather is near perfect in October, like September. It still feels like summer during the month. Tenerife will get its first dusting of snow in October. Most of the time there is not much of a difference between north and south when it comes to the weather.
Daytime shade temperatures range from 26-30C in the south and 24-28C in the north.
November
November is a very unpredictable month as it is in the middle of changing of seasons. Wild seas are almost guaranteed, but they do not affect what is happening on land. If you fancy a holiday in Tenerife in November, go to the south of the island. The southwest from Playa San Juan to Los Gigantes is where the sun is almost guaranteed. Temperatures across the island are still good with daytime shade temperatures ranged between 25-27C in the south and 22-25C in the north.
December
Things settle down by December, and although it can rain, it is one of the more reliably warm and sunny winter months. For many years, the weather in December in the north was regularly sunnier than the south. However, it was only by analyzing the weekly weather that things became clear. Spanish Met Office records show that December is one of the months when dust storms like to pay regular visits to the Canary Islands.
Dust storms bring windy, hazy conditions to the East and South but the mountainous spine of the Island the low-lying sand cloud that sweeps from North Africa. Therefore, the north is barely affected. In December daytime shade temperatures range from 23-25C in the south and 20-24C in the north.
