How Does a Split AC System Work

At the height of summer, ACs are probably the modern devices we cherish the most. Especially in the southern parts of the country, the temperatures can get quite unbearable and difficult to manage.

If you do not have a centralized AC system in your home, or your system just doesn’t reach every part of the house, there might be something you can do and change that.

Air conditioning experts from Hughes Air Conditioning & Heating Repair explain what split AC systems are and how they work.

What Does a Split AC System Look Like?

Just like your standard centralized AC system, the split system has an outdoor and an indoor unit. The first difference you are going to notice is the size.

Split systems are typically a lot smaller than central systems and the outdoor unit is mounted on the wall, housing the compressor, the condenser coils and all of the tubing.

The indoor unit is also mounted on the wall, but it is most commonly a modernly designed and visually appealing device which doesn’t clash with the rest of the house. This unit contains the cooling coil, the fan, and the air filter.

What’s the Difference?

If you are confused about the difference (other than the size), you are right; there is no difference. The operation principle is the same, the parts are largely the same and the purpose is the same.

However, split AC units are a lot easier to install because they don’t use ducts. That means that you will not have to do any major works in your home. The outdoor and the indoor unit are connected through tubes which require a lot less invasive installation process.

Cost and Efficiency

Right off the bat, you can assume that the split AC system is going to be cheaper. It is a lot smaller, and the installation is simpler, so even the installation cost is going to be noticeably lower.

When it comes to efficiency, contrary to the popular belief, ductless systems are actually more efficient. A lot of hot or cold air is dissipated and lost as it moves through the ducts and that ends up costing you more money.

Advantages of Split Systems

One of the benefits that split systems offer which not a lot of people consider is the quiet performance. The noisiest part of the system is outside, so you don’t have to hear it, and even though the same is true for the central AC systems, the ducts tend to carry a lot of the noise with them.

The energy efficiency is a factor people usually take into account, and in this case, the more eco-friendly solution is the split system.

Drawbacks of Split Systems

Even though these systems are great, they are not infallible. The volume of air a single split system can process and cool down is smaller than with a standard centralized system. That means that it will run for longer, which can reduce its lifespan.

Another issue people have with these systems is that the indoor unit typically doesn’t cover the whole house, unlike ducts. This problem can be solved by installing a multi-split system. In essence, one outdoor unit can be hooked to several indoor units.

This way, you can have a lot better control over the parts of the house you want to cool and the energy you spend. This precision air conditioning control has been the tipping point for a lot of people who have decided to try it out.

Even though most homes in the USA have central HVAC systems, there is still enough room for this different technology which can save you money.
