We live in a world where our lives are dominated by work. We have to spend a significant amount of time working to earn a living, and for this reason routine is important. To be able to fit in work along with getting enough sleep, running a home and other commitments, we need a routine to keep us on track. However, while it has its merits, living to a strict routine can also make life very mundane. It takes the surprise out of things, and it can often feel like we’re going through the motions and the same repetitive cycle day in day out. Before you know it you’re in a total rut, feel unhappy and don’t know what to do to make a change. If any of this rings true, here are some ideas.

Focus on Health

This doesn’t mean you need to get up at 6 am to go for a run before work or give up all of your favorite foods. It means focusing on a healthy lifestyle overall, and you can do this with just a few simple changes. Making swaps such as switching fizzy drinks for water and white pasta/ rice/ bread for whole grain are easy to do and make a significant difference. You don’t have to go out of your way, it’s just a case of making a slightly different choice when you eat and drink. If you don’t have much time on your hands and find yourself reaching for convenience foods often, one option would be to meal prep. Spend an hour at the weekend cooking and preparing food and save yourself money, time and hassle all week.

You could batch cook a large pot of food, portion it into containers and then freeze. After a few weeks you’ll have a nice selection of options and will always have healthy home cooked food when you want it- just pop it in the microwave. You could also cook up some healthy protein sources like salmon, turkey, chicken meatballs etc and some vegetables or salad and portion these into containers for lunches. When it comes to exercise, try to incorporate this into your life to be more active.

When you socialize with friends, perhaps suggest something like paintballing, a sporting activity or even a long walk. Walk or bike to work, play outdoors with your kids instead of sitting inside. You don’t have to make more time in your schedule to exercise, just use the time you have more wisely. You’ll look better, feel better, have more energy and enjoy life so much more.

Improve Your Career

It’s easy to get into a rut with your career. Perhaps you only ever intended to work at your current place as a stop gap, but succumbed to the safety of easy work and a reliable wage. Maybe your interests and passions have changed and so your work no longer suits you, or perhaps there’s no progression- or no more progression. Changing careers can be scary but could be the best thing you ever do. You can study online these days- take the online dnp nnp for example which allows you to progress in your nursing career. Otherwise, you could study a course in a field that you want to apply for jobs in later down the line.

Travel

When you work for most weeks of the year, the time that you do get off you wants to spend doing something worthwhile. Travel helps to open your mind, can give you memories that will last forever and help you to relax and rejuvenate. Instead of spending your holiday from work lounging around, arrange to do something exciting.
