Summer is soon coming to a close and before you know it, life will be back to sweaters and scarves. Before it ends though, you need to check your summer bucket list to make sure that you did everything that you set out to do. If you need a little help in figuring out what to do before the season ends, here are five things we consider necessities.

Check something off your lifetime bucket list

Is there anything that you have been wanting to do, but you haven’t yet? Maybe you’ve always wanted to go sky diving or bungee jumping, but you never made the time. Perhaps you always look at pictures on Instagram of your friend’s scuba diving and have thought, “Man, I should really give that a whirl.” Whatever it is, summertime is the perfect time to finally take the plunge!

Go on a Picnic

Before the sunny weather goes away, you should gather up some friends and family for a picnic. Find a nice grassy park or a quiet beach, spread a couple blankets out and enjoy a nice meal. It’s a good idea to prepare things that can be eaten with the hands—using a fork and knife while on a picnic just isn’t practical.

Get in the Water

If you have yet to get into a body of water, whether it be the ocean or a lake, take advantage of it. Rent a boat, go jet-skiing, go surfing, or just go for a dip. Organize a trip to the lake or rent a beach house with family and friends to soak up your time there.

Organize a BBQ

A barbecue is the quintessential summertime activity. Invite your friends, family, neighbors and even co-workers over to your place for some food and drinks. Don’t worry if you don’t have a grill because most parks and beaches have grills for public use. Brush up on your grilling skills or invite a grilling master so you get the best food. Make it a potluck and get everyone involved, including all the classic BBQ fare like corn on the cob, grilled zucchini, biscuits, chips, casseroles, desserts, and more. A BBQ is also a great excuse to enjoy some party games, like a rib eating contest or a three-legged race. Want to make your barbecue a bit more exciting? Pick a theme and ask guests to dress up! Celebrate American pride with a star-spangled shirt, or capture the relaxed vibes of the islands with Hawaiian shirts for men and women.

Go Camping

If you haven’t pitched a tent in the woods since you were a kid, it’s time to get back to it. Air out the old sleeping bags, get your firewood, and invite your family and friends for an old-fashioned camping trip. If you want to avoid crowds, go camping toward the end of summer or beginning of fall; this is when the kids go back to school. To get the most out of your experience, make sure you’re prepared. Create a list of what you need to bring, and ask for volunteers to chip in. Talk to your friends about what everyone has and what you need to pick up from REI to make for the perfect trip. Many campsites are close to town so you can pick up food and supplies, which makes grocery shopping a whole lot easier.

If you go camping, never go it alone. Even experienced campers are advised to go with a partner to avoid accidents. Before you set off on your camping adventure, look on your campground or National Park’s website to learn of any recent events like fires, road closures, animal sightings, or missing persons. Sudden changes in weather and certain animal sightings may indicate it’s a good idea to reschedule.

Don’t let summer slip away without indulging in some fun summer activities. Take advantage of what’s left of the summer sun by trying one of these seasonal favorites.
